Abstract

Background. Subject of this research is a research (scientific-pedagogical) school – a phenomenon of the intellectual environment, which is typical for professional scientific communities. This phenomenon is examined for the purpose to determine the formalized indicators defining its presence (absence), as well as the applicability for determining the higher education institutions rating in Russia.
Materials and methods. The research results were achieved by means of research school simulation. In this connection the essential criteria were defined in the re-search schools that were historically established and obtained recognition in the world science and the national science.
Results. Chief features of the research (scientific-pedagogical) school are re-searched and reasoned. The suggestions concerning their quantitative characteristic were stated. Application principles of the research school in the process of the Rus-sian higher education institutions rating determination were suggested.
Conclusions. The phenomenon of the research (scientific-pedagogical) school formation is a natural trait of development of the scientific and educational milieu in the higher school. In authors‟ opinion it can be expressed in the system of quantita-tive measures and used for determining the higher education institutions rating in Russia. Broad debates about the criteria for their separation in the research and edu-cational community is a compulsory condition thereto.
